Joey, 23, found hanged in Chelmsford Prison cell

A young man was found hanged in Chelmsford Prison – just three months after he was jailed.

Joey Corcoran, 23, from East Ham, was remanded in June accused of burglary, driving while disqualified, theft and dangerous driving, and was set for trial next month. stayed in a single cell on B Wing, but on September 15 he was found hanged with bed sheets in his cell.

He is the first person to have died at the prison, since a spate of 12 hangings from 2001 to 2011.

Prison governor Rob Davis said he is deeply saddened by the news of Corcoran’s death.

Mr Davis said: “Everyone is a bit in shock, you’d be surprised that even the most hardened prison officers are affected by it.”
