The sudden death of UK reggae icon Smiley Culture during a police raid by the Metropolitan Police Serious and Organised Crime Squad has sent shockwaves through the UK urban music scene and black communities.

Questions are being raised within Black communities in London over reports that the former singer ‘killed himself’.

There is a growing consensus that the reggae star may have been involved in a struggle with police officers that may have contributed to the stars untimely death.

4th anniversary of Gilly Mundy’s death

17 March 2011 will mark four years since the death of one of the stalwarts of the campaign movement against deaths in police custody and abuse by police and prison officers in the United Kingdom. Gilly saved three lives and restored the sight of two others when he donated his organs after his death in March 2007.

Friend and colleague Kevin Blowe said: “As a campaigner and activist, Gilly managed to cram so much into his own life and touch the lives of so many others that it is almost too painful to imagine what more he could have achieved.

The family of Daniel Morgan leave the Old Bailey after three men are acquitted of charges over the 1987 murder of a private investigator who was found with an axe embedded in his head in a pub car park. Events as they unfolded following Daniel Morgan’s murder in 1987, as five separate police inquiries fail to identify his killers.

10 March 1987

Daniel Morgan’s body is found slumped by his BMW in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, south London.

Detective Sergeant Sid Fillery, of Catford police station, is assigned to the case. He fails to tell his bosses he moonlighted for Southern Investigations.
