Jeremy Bamber, whose convictions for murdering five of his relatives more than 25 years ago will not be referred to the court of appeal. Jeremy Bamber, who has spent 24 years in jail convicted of murdering five members of his family, a crime he has always denied, has lost his latest attempt to prove his innocence.

A panel from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) ruled it would not refer Bamber’s case back to the court of appeal. His lawyers plan to appeal. It was a bitter blow for Bamber, now 50, and his supporters, who believed they had uncovered new evidence that showed flaws in the crown’s case.

Two imprisoned sisters whose sentences were dropped on the condition that one donate her kidney to the other have been released from jail in Mississippi. The pair, who had been in jail for 16 years, are moving to the US state of Florida, where their family lives.

Jamie Scott requires daily dialysis, which costs the state roughly $200,000 (£129,000) per year, officials said. She and her sister Gladys Scott were convicted in 1994 of taking part in a robbery that netted a mere $11 (£7).

Convicted wife killer freed from prison

A man who has always maintained he was wrongly convicted of murdering his pregnant wife has been released from prison on parole. Eddie Gilfoyle, 49, was found guilty of killing his wife Paula, who was found hanged in the garage of the couple’s home in Upton, Wirral in 1992. Prosecutors claimed he had fooled the 32-year-old into writing a suicide note before tying a noose around her neck.

The Parole Board said Gilfoyle was not allowed to speak to the media. He was released from Sudbury Prison in Derbyshire on Wednesday with conditions attached to his licence.
