Stephen Lawrence murder: 20th anniversary to be marked

The mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence has begun a campaign to mark the 20th anniversary of his death. Doreen Lawrence said she wants to ensure no other family has to go through what she endured.

The campaign will include talking to new police commissioners and a memorial service on 22 April – the date Stephen was killed in Eltham in 1993

The announcement comes exactly a year after Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted of his murder.

More than 100 cops and civilian staff quit while under investigation by West Midlands Police

More than 100 cops and civilian staff have resigned or retired while under investigation by West Midlands Police, shock new figures have revealed. And a total of 26 employees admitted or were convicted of criminal offences – while a further eight received cautions.

The Mail has also discovered two cops under investigation have remained suspended on FULL PAY since 2010, eight since 2011 and two this year.

A Freedom of Information request to West Midlands Police revealed 111 officers, PCSOs and civilian staff resigned or retired while under investigation between 2009 and 2012.

The police have been going through a rough patch recently. First they were implicated in the phone-hacking scandal – though they managed to escape most of the blame when we collectively came to the surprising conclusion that it was more serious for tabloid journalists to neglect the public interest than officers of the crown.

But while they deflected a lot of that responsibility, their attempts to deflect it over Hillsborough have been catastrophically counterproductive. And as senior officers have been caught dining with Murdochs or maligning the dead, officers on the ground have been getting shot and called plebs. Or not called plebs, depending on who you believe.
