INQUEST response to IPCC statistics on deaths during or following police contact 2011/12

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has published its statistics for deaths during or following contact with the police occurring between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012.

In response, Deborah Coles, co-director of INQUEST said:

“The figures reveal a disturbing number of people who despite being clearly vulnerable or in distress have been taken into police custody rather than to a hospital or specialist mental health unit. This reflects INQUEST’s ongoing concerns about the way people with mental health issues are dealt with by the police, many of which are being scrutinised currently at the inquest into the death of Sean Rigg.

Police officer accused of telling ‘a pack of lies’ over death in custody

A Metropolitan police constable involved in physically restraining a man who died soon after in custody has been accused at an inquest of telling “a pack of lies” after photographic evidence confirmed he held the detainee’s face down for far longer than he claimed.

PC Richard Glasson was one of three officers involved in restraining Sean Rigg, an acutely mentally unwell man, who died in Brixton police station in south London in August 2008.

PC Glasson was accused of using “inappropriate and excessive” physical force on Mr Rigg’s back which could have caused him to asphyxiate.

National Fathers Day vigils make a mark of unity

On 17th June 2012 people gathered at peaceful vigils to remember fathers that have died in police, prison, mental health and immigration detention.

These nationally organised and coordinated peaceful vigils took place simultaneously in Manchester, Birmingham, Central London, Brixton, Tottenham, Sheffield, Slough, High Wycombe and a number of other locations across the country.
