The High Court has ordered a new inquest into the death of a 22-year-old student from north London whose body was found on a motorway in Germany.

Jeremiah Duggan, from Golders Green, was found near Wiesbaden in March 2003. A German inquest found he killed himself but this ruling was later disputed by a British coroner.

Lord Justice Elias said the inquest must investigate possible “foul play” after new evidence hinted the crash was faked and he might have been killed.

McKinnon asks new Government to halt his US extradition

Gary McKinnon’s legal team has appealed to the new coalition government to halt the self-confessed hacker’s extradition to the US. The Nasa hacker’s solicitor Karen Todner said in a Friday statement that she had asked the Conservative home secretary Theresa May to “intervene and prevent the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the USA”.

McKinnon, who suffers from Asperger syndrome, hacked into 97 US military systems between 2001 and 2002 in what he claims was a search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. According to the US authorities, he caused $700,000 £485,000 damage and should stand trial in that country. If convicted in the US, he could be sentenced to 70 years in a maximum security federal prison.

‘Asylum has become a dirty word’

The Scottish Refugee Council says that 25 years since it was set up, the situation for asylum seekers and refugees is worse than ever. BBC Scotland’s social affairs reporter Fiona Walker looks at how attitudes have changed.

Peri Ibrahim shows me the cameras he used to document his life before he fled here. When he looks through the lens it transports him back to times of conflict.

“Every time I look through, I see the dead body,” he said. “Stupid camera.” Peri has lived in Scotland for 25 years – the same amount of time the Scottish Refugee Council has been in existence.
