Family seeks answers after psychiatric care death

The family of a man who died under psychiatric care have called for “justice” and “answers”. Jonathan Malia sought help for bipolar disorder and was transferred to a private secure unit.

The 24-year-old father, of Handsworth, Birmingham, was treated in the city but was then moved to Hertfordshire. It is thought he died from a heart attack caused by a blood clot.

The hospital in Stevenage where he was being treated said it did all it could. A second post mortem examination took place on Monday and an inquest is due to follow.

Two police officers prosecuted over mentally ill man’s death

Two police officers are to be prosecuted for misconduct in public office after a 52-year-old man died while under police restraint.

PCs Maurice Leigh and Neil Bowdery are to appear in court in connection with the death of Colin Holt, who died from positional asphyxia at his home in Gillingham, Kent, on 30 August 2010. The summonses to Medway magistrates court on 8 October follow an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Holt’s death occurred after staff at Medway Maritime hospital called police to report that Holt, who had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, was missing.

‘Lessons Will Be Learned’ after the death of Sean Rigg, say police

The mealy-mouthed phrase ‘lessons will be learned’ seems to be the last refuge of all senior police officers when caught out with no one else to blame and no other way to explain away a public scandal.

We heard it again on Newsnight (BBC2) on 1 August as Assistant Commissioner Simon Byrne, the second most senior officer at Scotland Yard, squirmed in his seat and comprehensively failed to convince anyone that his force had behaved ethically or honourably in relation to the squalid and eminently preventable death of Sean Rigg at Brixton Police Station in August 2008.
