Scathing verdict from jury on conclusion of inquest into death of psychiatric patient

On 6 May 2011 the jury returned a decisive and highly critical verdict of the acts and omissions of Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust following the inquest into the circumstances of the death of Louise Noon. The jury’s verdict came after several hours of careful deliberation and three days of detailed evidence and legal submissions before HM Coroner for Norfolk, William J Armstrong sitting at Norwich City Football Club grounds.

Louise died by suicide in her room at Northgate Hospital on 23 July 2011 having quickly become very ill suffering from symptoms of bi-polar affective disorder. Louise hanged herself using a cord in her possession from a ligature point within her room, despite having made several similar suicide attempts in the days preceding, of which she alerted staff.

Inquest into death of High Wycombe man Marcus Cottoy

A 31-year-old man who feared ‘people were after him’ died after consuming drugs, an inquest heard this week. Marcus Cottoy, of Hawthorne Road, Micklefield, died on March 22, 2009, hours after being arrested and sectioned in a mental health unit. The inquest into his death began in Winslow yesterday and is scheduled to last eight days. Mr Cottoy had become “paranoid” that people were following him on the previous night, the inquest heard.

At about midnight he pleaded with bar staff at the King George V pub on London Road to call the police, saying he had smashed a window with a pool ball and wanted to be arrested, the inquest heard.

Claris Powell, mother of Mikey Powell, has made a police complaint that the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police has misled the Police Authority in his report on the inquest into the death of Mikey Powell and failed to take any action as a result of the verdict.

Mikey Powell was handcuffed by police and put on the floor of a police van which drove to Thornhill Road Police Station in Birmingham in September 2003.

The jury found in December 2009 that Mikey Powell died of positional asphyxia in the back of a police van and that he was lying on his front on arrival at the police station, contrary to the van officers’ evidence at the inquest.
