The theft of a blue plaque honouring a British-Nigerian man who drowned after he was chased by police is being treated as a hate crime. The memorial to David Oluwale, on Leeds Bridge, disappeared just hours after it was officially unveiled on Monday.

Members of the campaign group who lobbied for its installation said it had been prised off the wall and taken. West Yorkshire Police said the timing of the theft suggested it was a “deliberately targeted act”.

The plaque commemorating Mr Oluwale had been placed near the spot where he entered the River Aire in 1969.

Aaron Dean, the former Fort Worth police officer who is accused of murder in the 2019 shooting death of Atatiana Jefferson, is set to go to trial May 16, with jury selection beginning on May 9.

Jefferson, a 28-year-old Black woman, was shot inside her own home in south Fort Worth in October 2019. Dean, who was responding to a neighbor’s call about open doors at the home, shot Jefferson through a window.

Patrick Lyoya: Video shows fatal US police shooting of black man

Police video has been released of a white officer fatally shooting a black man in the back of the head after a scuffle over a stun gun.

Footage of the 4 April incident in Grand Rapids, Michigan, shows Patrick Lyoya, 26, running from the officer following a traffic stop.

The officer, who has not been named, is then heard telling Mr Lyoya to “let go” of his Taser, before the man is shot as he lies face-down on the ground. The shooting has led to protests.
