A major inquest is to be held into the death of a man who died after being restrained by police. A jury will hear the inquest into the death of Habib Ullah from December 6 [2010]. It is expected to last eight days.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission – called in after the July 3 2008 death – will then publish its report on Thames Valley Police’s handling of the case.

Mr Ullah, 39, died after being searched and restrained by police over drug suspicions in Sharrow Vale, High Wycombe. Crack cocaine was later found in his colon and throat.

Ken Clarke sets up secret inquiry into police killing of Azelle Rodney

A “secret” judicial inquiry is to be held into the death of Azelle Rodney, an unarmed 24-year-old black Londoner who was shot by a Metropolitan police marksman five years ago, the new justice secretary, Kenneth Clarke, has announced.

Rodney, a suspect in a major drugs investigation, was shot dead by an undercover team from Scotland Yard’s CO19 armed unit on a suburban road in Edgware, north London, on 30 April 2005 – 11 weeks before the death of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell underground station.

Still no justice for Mulrunji – stop black deaths in custody

On May 18, the Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission CMC announced it would take over primary responsibility for investigating all deaths in police custody in the state.

This followed the recommendation made by deputy chief magistrate Brian Hine when he delivered his findings on May 14 to the third coronial inquest into the 2004 death of Aboriginal man Mulrunji Doomadgee in the Palm Island watch house.

On November 19, 2004, Mulrunji was walking home when sergeant Chris Hurley, driving by in his police vehicle, arrested him on a drunk and disorderly charge. He was taken to the Palm Island watch house where there was a struggle, resulting in a fall.
