Stephen Lawrence murder: 20th anniversary to be marked

The mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence has begun a campaign to mark the 20th anniversary of his death. Doreen Lawrence said she wants to ensure no other family has to go through what she endured.

The campaign will include talking to new police commissioners and a memorial service on 22 April – the date Stephen was killed in Eltham in 1993

The announcement comes exactly a year after Gary Dobson and David Norris were convicted of his murder.

Another handcuffed young man manages to shoot himself?

A perturbing trend is emerging in the South. Twice in six months, young men have managed to shoot themselves in the head while in handcuffs in the back of police cars, after having been searched for weapons. For many critical observers, the circumstances beggar belief.

In August of this year, police in Jonesboro, Ark. claimed that Chavis Carter, 21, committed suicide while in the back of a patrol car. He was handcuffed at the time and had already been searched for weapons.

Lawrence killers lose appeal to challenge conviction

The two men found guilty of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 have lost their first round of their attempt to challenge their convictions.

Gary Dobson and David Norris were jailed for life in January for the murdering the black teenager near a bus stop in Eltham, south-east London.

Dobson is serving a minimum of 15 years and two months, and David Norris 14 years and three months. Their applications for permission to appeal were rejected by a single Court of Appeal judge, who considered the papers from the case.
