Relatives bereaved by the 1974 terror attacks had asked Home Secretary Amber Rudd to establish a fund similar to that created for the families represented at the Hillsborough stadium disaster inquests.

Ms Rudd has turned down the request, made by nine of the families, but said she supports their application for legal aid funding through the conventional route of the independent Legal Aid Agency (LAA). The families’ lawyers have been working pro bono to date.

Father of Cheryl James calls Deepcut ‘a toxic environment’ after verdict

Deepcut army barracks was “a toxic and horrible environment,” the father of Private Cheryl James has said following the long-awaited conclusion of an inquiry into his daughter’s death.

Pte James, who was 18 when she was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in 1995, had “inflicted the fatal shot and intended to die,“ coroner Brian Barker QC told Woking Coroner’s Court.

“There can be no reasonable doubt that Ms James carried out an intended action and knew that its consequence would be death.”

Seni Lewis death: No action against police, prosecutors say

No criminal action will be taken against police involved in the death of a man restrained by officers in a London psychiatric hospital. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction.

Olaseni (Seni) Lewis, who had mental health problems, was a patient at Bethlem Royal Hospital, in Beckenham. He was restrained three times, first by hospital staff and then by police, in the 45 minutes before his collapse.
