Gov. Haley Barbour met Thursday (23rd Dec 2010) with the NAACP, a day after he suspended the double life sentences for Jamie and Gladys Scott, sisters who have spent years in prison for a robbery that netted $11.00. “We all worked together to make justice work in this state,” said National NAACP President Benjamin Jealous. “I’m here to thank the people and the governor of Mississippi. When you are right, you are right. Gov. Barbour, you were right today.”

According to court records, the Scott sisters were found guilty in 1994 of luring two men down a road near Forest, where three young assailants used a shotgun to rob the men. Gladys Scott is now 36 years old and Jamie Scott is 38 years old.

Convicted wife killer freed from prison

A man who has always maintained he was wrongly convicted of murdering his pregnant wife has been released from prison on parole. Eddie Gilfoyle, 49, was found guilty of killing his wife Paula, who was found hanged in the garage of the couple’s home in Upton, Wirral in 1992. Prosecutors claimed he had fooled the 32-year-old into writing a suicide note before tying a noose around her neck.

The Parole Board said Gilfoyle was not allowed to speak to the media. He was released from Sudbury Prison in Derbyshire on Wednesday with conditions attached to his licence.

On the evening of October 10, 1999 multiple tragedies struck. Mike turned on a lamp in his apartment and left to get gas in the car for his wife so she would have enough fuel to drive to work in the morning.

While he was away from home, for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, flames were seen in the area where the lamp was located, by a neighbor. Mike’s wife was burned and his son died of smoke inhalation.
