Linda Bush, the mother of a 22-year-old millworker shot in the back of the head by an RCMP officer, said she is abandoning her lawsuit against the force and her nearly five-year-old fight for justice.

At a joint media conference with the force Wednesday in Vancouver, she said the decision was motivated by changes the force had made to its handling of in-custody deaths and the reforms under consideration.

Government death row pleas are ‘ignored by Texas’

An attempted intervention by the British government in the case of death row inmate Linda Carty has been ignored by the state of Texas, her lawyers have said. Ms Carty, a British passport-holder, was sentenced to death by a Texan court in 2002 for her alleged part in the murder of Joana Rodriguez.

Despite a bilateral convention, Britain was not informed that one of its citizens had been arrested on murder charges. Ms Carty has always protested her innocence and is now seeking to persuade the US Supreme Court that her conviction and death sentence are unsafe.

Nigeria police found guilty in Borno sect clashes case

The family of a man who died in police custody in Nigeria during an Islamist uprising last year has welcomed a court ruling against the police.

The court in Borno State said Baba Fugu Mohommed’s killing was “brutal” and compared it to the Spanish Inquisition. The judge said he had been killed simply because he was the father-in-law of Mohammed Yusuf, the leader the Boko Haram sect behind the violence.

Mr Yusuf was also killed after the July clashes, allegedly in police custody.
