Mark Duggan’s brother Shaun Hall calls for justice over ‘assassination’

The brother of Mark Duggan – the Tottenham man shot dead by police in August – has made an emotional appeal for “justice”. 

Launching the Tottenham Defence Campaign today with three other families who have lost relatives in police incidents, Shaun Hall described the death of his brother in Ferry Lane on August 4 as “an assassination”.

He said: “What had my brother done so wrong? He had no criminal record and was not wanted by the police for anything as far as we know, so why did it happen?

“We’re told the police officer was scared – what was he scared of? Was he adequately trained? Why didn’t the local Tottenham police intervene?

In the waning hours of protests against the execution on Troy Davis by the state of Georgia last Wednesday, one action drew particular notice: a group of six former wardens and correctional officials pleading for clemency and suggesting that prison staffers be allowed to refuse to take part in the death process.

“While most of the prisoners whose executions we participated in accepted responsibility for the crimes for which they were punished,” the wardens’ statement read, “some of us have also executed prisoners who maintained their innocence until the end. It is those cases that are most haunting to an executioner….

IPCC takes over Powell family van complaint investigation

IPCC to take over investigation into complaint against van officers

The IPPC are to independently investigate a complaint by Claris Powell, made following the jury’s verdict at the Inquest into the death of her son, Mikey, in a police van on the way to a police station. The IPCC made this decision on 27 May 2011, after Claris Powell threatened to judicially review their decision to allow West Midlands Police themselves to investigate the complaint against their own officers.

An Inquest jury found on December 18 2009 that Mikey had died in the back of a police van of positional asphyxia.
