Scotland Yard ‘face multi-million payout over botched murder investigation’

Scotland Yard may be forced to payout millions of pounds to former suspects following a botched investigation after a man was killed with an axe in south-east London, it has emerged.

Private detective Daniel Morgan was found with the weapon lodged in his head in the car park of a pub, in Sydenham, in 1987 after meeting his business partner Jonathan Rees for a drink.

The 30-year-old case has been plagued by a series of failed inquiries which have reportedly already cost the tax payer over £50 million. In April 2008 a group of men, including Mr Rees, were arrested over Mr Morgan’s murder.

Court hears how cop lied over Sean Rigg’s death

A police officer lied in July 2012 when he gave evidence to the inquest into the death of Sean Rigg, a court heard this week.

Sean died in Brixton police station on 21 August 2008. Paul White was the custody sergeant in the police station on that day.

CCTV has shown that, when Sean was brought to the police station, he was held in a van in the yard.

After ten minutes he was moved to a caged area in the police station.

Police body cameras ‘cut complaints against officers’ says research

Police body cameras can dramatically reduce the number of complaints against officers, research suggests. The Cambridge University study showed complaints by members of the public against officers fell by 93% over 12 months compared with the year before.

Almost 2,000 officers across four UK forces and two US police departments were monitored for the project. Dr Barak Ariel, who led the research, said no other policing measure had led to such “radical” changes.

The study aimed to find out if the use of cameras, which are usually clipped to the top half of an officer’s uniform, affected complaints against police made by the public.
