Officer lied about checking on mother before death in police cell

Sharmila Ullah was taken into police custody in July 2014 after being arrested for shoplifting. The 30-year-old, of Fourth Avenue, was admitted to Walsall Manor Hospital from Bloxwich Police Station after suffering abdominal pain and vomiting.

The mother, known as Millie, was returned to her cell the following morning where a doctor certified her as fit to be detained. But shortly after 11.50am on July 10 she was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at hospital less than an hour later.

Father of Cheryl James calls Deepcut ‘a toxic environment’ after verdict

Deepcut army barracks was “a toxic and horrible environment,” the father of Private Cheryl James has said following the long-awaited conclusion of an inquiry into his daughter’s death.

Pte James, who was 18 when she was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in 1995, had “inflicted the fatal shot and intended to die,“ coroner Brian Barker QC told Woking Coroner’s Court.

“There can be no reasonable doubt that Ms James carried out an intended action and knew that its consequence would be death.”

Tamir Rice shooting: Cleveland to settle with $6M

The city of Cleveland will pay $6 million to settle the federal lawsuit filed by the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy killed by police gunfire in November 2014, according to a settlement announced Monday in U.S. District Court.

According to terms of the settlement, the city acknowledges no fault in Tamir’s death, which came after a 911 caller told of someone in a city park brandishing what appeared to be a toy gun.

Officer Timothy Loehmann, a trainee, shot Tamir moments after arriving in response to the call. Police said the boy was pulling out what was later found to be a toy gun when he was shot.
