The family of reggae star Smiley Culture said police had “a lot to answer to” after his death earlier this week. The singer, whose real name was David Emmanuel, died at his home in Surrey on Tuesday morning following a police raid. His family have been told he stabbed himself while making a cup of tea in his kitchen while police were still inside his home.

Smiley Culture, 48, found fame with a string of 1980s’ hits including Cockney Translation and appeared on Top of the Pops.

Events as they unfolded following Daniel Morgan’s murder in 1987, as five separate police inquiries fail to identify his killers.

Daniel Morgan’s body is found slumped by his BMW in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, south London.

Detective Sergeant Sid Fillery, of Catford police station, is assigned to the case. He fails to tell his bosses he moonlighted for Southern Investigations.

Jeremy Bamber loses attempt to appeal

Jeremy Bamber, whose convictions for murdering five of his relatives more than 25 years ago will not be referred to the court of appeal. Jeremy Bamber, who has spent 24 years in jail convicted of murdering five members of his family, a crime he has always denied, has lost his latest attempt to prove his innocence.

A panel from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) ruled it would not refer Bamber’s case back to the court of appeal. His lawyers plan to appeal. It was a bitter blow for Bamber, now 50, and his supporters, who believed they had uncovered new evidence that showed flaws in the crown’s case.
