Safer in Custody stats published

The Ministry of Justice today published its Safer in Custody Statistics Bulletin for 2009 which provides an analysis on deaths, self harm and violence in prison. The statistics are an important source of information for those interested in understanding and improving safety in prison and other custodial settings.

The publication analyses deaths, self-harm and violence in prison custody, looking at trends across age, gender and time in prison custody.

The bulletin is released by the Ministry of Justice and produced in accordance with arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The campaign to End the Death Penalty (CEDP) is appalled by the news that several individuals of leading anti-death penalty organizations have signed a confidential memorandum stating that the “involvement of Mumia Abu-Jamal endangers the U.S. coalition for abolition of the death penalty.”

The memo further argues that the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty should not highlight Mumia’s case because doing so “unnecessarily attracts our strongest opponents and alienates coalition partners at a time when we need to build alliances, not foster hatred and enmity.”

Major inquest into death of police search man, Habib Ullah

A major inquest is to be held into the death of a man who died after being restrained by police. A jury will hear the inquest into the death of Habib Ullah from December 6 [2010]. It is expected to last eight days.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission – called in after the July 3 2008 death – will then publish its report on Thames Valley Police’s handling of the case.

Mr Ullah, 39, died after being searched and restrained by police over drug suspicions in Sharrow Vale, High Wycombe. Crack cocaine was later found in his colon and throat.
