Axe murder trial postponed by judge again

The trial of four men accused of the axe murder of private eye Daniel Morgan in 1987 has been put back until September this year.William Rees, 54, Garry Vian, 48, his brother Glenn, 50, and builder James Cook, 54, allegedly killed the 37 year-old on March 10, 1987. Mr Morgan, who co-ran private detective agency Southern Investigations with Rees, was found dead outside the Golden Lion pub, in Sydenham, with a hatchet embedded in his head.

The trial was originally due to take place in April last year but was delayed until October for legal reasons. At the end of a day-long hearing at the Old Bailey, Mr Justice Maddison put it back to September 13, 2010.

Supreme Court ruling against Mumia

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal and granted the Philadelphia DA’s petition for a writ of certiorari. Basically, the Supreme Court went against the lower federal circuit court’s 2001 and 2008 rulings, which granted a new sentencing phase jury trial if the death penalty was to be reinstated in Jamal’s case.

Now the case goes back down to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, who will decide whether they will re-impose the death penalty without the jury trial.

In a recent interview with the Block Report, Mumia spoke about the Spisak case, in which the death penalty has since been reinstated for the white supremacist murderer Frank Spisak.

Secret Blair Peach document withheld by Home Office

Government officials withheld a document relating to the death of Blair Peach, the anti-fascist campaigner widely believed to have been killed by police in 1979, because they feared it would portray the coroner as biased and lend weight to calls for a public inquiry.

Peach, a 33-year-old teacher from New Zealand, died after being struck on the head at a demonstration against the National Front in Southall, west London. Witnesses said they saw him being attacked by police but after an internal investigation by the Metropolitan police no officers were charged.
