American civil rights leader Martin Luther King will have his legacy honoured at central London’s Trafalgar Square today with bell-ringers to mark 50 years since he delivered his iconic “I have a dream” speech.

King made the speech on August 28, 1963, in Washington DC as about 250,000 people marched on the US capital demanding equality.

And in the world-famous London landmark 50 young people from across Britain will ring bells at 3pm to remember the time the rights champion concluded his speech.

“Fifty years on and it’s hard not to be inspired by the Martin Luther King speech and the march on Washington”, said Natalie Wade, director of Small Green Shoots, a charity involved in organising the bell-ringing ceremony today.
