Nelson Mandela, hero and former president of South Africa, dies at 95

A sombre South African President Jacob Zuma announced Mandela’s death in a television address. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss,” Zuma said.

“His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, his compassion and his humanity earned him their love.” Zuma said he has ordered all flags in South Africa to be lowered to half-mast, where they will remain until after what will be a state funeral.

Police body cameras – not the panacea they are claimed to be

A number of police forces have recently announced that they hold large scale trials of body worn video cameras for all officers on patrol.

These cameras will be attached to police uniforms, and can be switched on or off at the discretion of officers.

The reaction from civil liberties organisations have been muted, but Netpol has spoken out publicly against the routine use of bodycams, and the implications of further extending police surveillance capacity.

Man detained under Mental Health Act by Surrey police dies in hospital

A man who was detained under the Mental Health Act has died in hospital after his condition deteriorated at a police station. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating Surrey police following the death of 33-year-old Terry Smith.

The ambulance service requested police help just after 10pm on Tuesday after being called to an address in Stanwell, Surrey.

Smith was held under the Mental Health Act and taken to Staines police station where he was then arrested on suspicion of a drugs-related offence. His health deteriorated and he was taken from the station by ambulance to St Peter’s hospital in Chertsey, where he died at around 9pm on Wednesday.
