Proceedings against West Midlands Police: Mikey Powell

Long before the criminal trial and the Inquest, Mikey’s mother Claris and other family members issued claims against the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police because of Mikey’s death. Once the Inquest was finished the family served details of their claims on the Chief Constable – this is the next step towards a trial in the High Court. The details are based on the evidence at the Inquest.

The Chief Constable gave his defence on 25 June 2010 – he denies more or less everything.

Undaunted the family are pressing documents they believe they have not yet seen from the Chief Constable.

Hundreds pledge support for family of Kingsley Burrell

Hundreds of people packed a city community centre to show their support for the family of a Birmingham father who died in police custody. The public meeting at the African Caribbean Millennium Centre in Dudley Road, Winson Green, was organised by the family of Kingsley Burrell, 29, who died just days after he was arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into his death. Kingsley’s sister Kadisha Brown-Burrell said her brother, who lived in Hockley, did not have mental health issues.

Stoke Heath young offender found hanged

A prisoner serving a sentence in Shropshire has died after being found hanged in his cell. Nicholas Saunders, 18, was at HMP Stoke Heath, which holds young offenders.

He was found hanging in his cell at 1330 BST on Saturday. Staff attempted emergency resuscitation and paramedics tried to save him, but Mr Saunders was pronounced dead at 1440 BST.

The Prison Service said as with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would investigate.
