Prisoner died after warders failed to provide treatment for his cancer

A prison complaints body has slammed HMP Birmingham after a terminally-ill convict had to wait until he was ‘screaming in agony’ before being admitted to hospital. Carl Dent, of Woodcross, in Bilston, was riddled with cancer and died on July 5 last year, eight weeks after he was finally taken from the Winson Green prison to New Cross Hospital, in Wolverhampton.

The 36-year-old was serving an 11-year sentence for sex offences, including indecent assault and indecency with a child.

Senior political figures joined forces with police chiefs, health professionals, and also families of the dead who gave traumatic accounts of their long fight seeking justice for their loved ones.

Those directly involved in policing and mental health vowed it will be a turning point in the campaign for justice, empathy and expertise when dealing with those in mental crisis.

Man shot six times by police WAS ‘unlawfully killed’

An inquiry into the death of a man shot six times by police has concluded that he was unlawfully killed. Azelle Rodney, 24, died after an officer opened fire on a car he was travelling in eight years ago. The car was under surveillance for several hours before unmarked officers stopped it in Edgware, North London, in 2005. Rodney was a passenger in the back seat of the car.

The marksman, known only as E7, told the inquiry he feared the occupants were armed with a sub-machine gun capable of firing more than 1,000 rounds per minute. It was believed the group were on their way to rob a Colombian drugs gang.
