Staff at an immigration centre where four men died warned bosses lives were at risk a YEAR before the first death, explosive new evidence reveals. As an official investigation into the scandal is set to begin, whistleblowers today claim the mental health of detainees has been seriously neglected.

They say refugee asylum seekers at Morton Hall in Lincolnshire are driven to self-harm and the brink of suicide as they are bullied by convicted criminals awaiting deportation – and even used to smuggle drugs around “no-go areas” in the centre.

Since October 31, hundreds of men have barricaded themselves in an abandoned complex on a naval base where security forces have previously shot at and attacked them.

Exhausted, with no power and no running water in the tropical heat, they stockpiled food, dug water wells, and collected rainwater in trash cans to drink. Now, they are dehydrated, starving, and scared.

These men are not in a war zone, though many of them have fled war in places like Afghanistan, Iraq and Sudan.

For ODI managing director Marta Foresti the principal change in strategy to arise from the immigration crisis of 2015, when a million would-be refugees entered Europe, is an economic one.
