A deeply divided Venezuela is mourning its late leader and preparing to pick a new president to replace him. Venezuelan officials called for peace and unity after President Hugo Chavez’s death on Tuesday, emphasizing in state television broadcasts that all branches of the government and the military were standing together.

Elections will be held in 30 days, and Vice President Nicolas Maduro will assume the presidency in the interim, Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said in an interview broadcast on state-run VTV.

The Powell family have held a candlelight vigil in memory of Mikey Powell who was killed in police custody in 2003. The vigil took place outside the Thornhill Road police station, Birmingham, West Midlands.

Mikey’s cousin (and founder of 4WardEver Campaign UK), Tippa Naphtali said; “This years candlelit vigil for Mikey’s 9th memorial was attended by family and friends from the local region and also further out. Friends, family and civil rights leaders remember Rodney King

Family, friends, a host of civil rights leaders and celebrities attended a memorial service for the late Rodney King today, two weeks after he died of an apparent accidental drowning at his home in Rialto. The service, which was held Hall of Liberty on the grounds of Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills. About a third of the hall’s 1,200 seats were full.

Those who knew King best painted a picture of a sometimes troubled but good man caught up in extraordinary circumstances. King catapulted into public consciousness after his videotaped beating at the hands of LA police officers was broadcast worldwide. He became a poster child for police misconduct, but also a catalyst for change inside the LAPD.
