Troy Davis’ sister dies of cancer

Martina Davis-Correia, sister of the late Troy Davis, has died. Davis-Correia passed after a long battle with cancer and was the firestorm that took her brother’s case to international heights. Although few people initially paid attention to the faulty murder conviction of this young black male in Georgia, Davis’ sister dedicated her life to fighting for her brother’s freedom.

Davis was killed by lethal injection on September 21 of this year. The execution was covered by international media, and there are millions around the world who consider the execution of Davis to be one of the most symbolic indicators of injustice in American history.

Peace campaigner Brian Haw dies

Peace campaigner Brian Haw has died after “a long hard fight” against lung cancer, his family has announced. Mr Haw, 62, set up a camp in London’s Parliament Square in 2001 in protest against UK and US foreign policy. In March 2011, a High Court ruling obtained by London’s mayor forced him to move his camp on to the pavement.

In a statement posted on Mr Haw’s website, his family said he had died on 18 June in Germany, where he had been receiving medical treatment. They said Mr Haw, from Redditch, Worcestershire, passed away in his sleep in no pain.

4th anniversary of Gilly Mundy’s death

17 March 2011 will mark four years since the death of one of the stalwarts of the campaign movement against deaths in police custody and abuse by police and prison officers in the United Kingdom. Gilly saved three lives and restored the sight of two others when he donated his organs after his death in March 2007.

Friend and colleague Kevin Blowe said: “As a campaigner and activist, Gilly managed to cram so much into his own life and touch the lives of so many others that it is almost too painful to imagine what more he could have achieved.
