A major inquest is to be held into the death of a man who died after being restrained by police. A jury will hear the inquest into the death of Habib Ullah from December 6 [2010]. It is expected to last eight days.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission – called in after the July 3 2008 death – will then publish its report on Thames Valley Police’s handling of the case.

Mr Ullah, 39, died after being searched and restrained by police over drug suspicions in Sharrow Vale, High Wycombe. Crack cocaine was later found in his colon and throat.

Troy Davis finally makes his case to federal judge in Savannah

Attorneys for Troy Davis presented their side in the long-awaited evidentiary hearing Wednesday at the federal courthouse in Savannah. Davis, who is on death row, is trying to prove he is an innocent man in an argument that has not been used before. Davis’s lawyers argue he should not be executed because it would be unconstitutional to kill an innocent man.

The U.S. Supreme Court ordered the evidentiary hearing. Davis must prove to the court he is innocent through new evidence.

On Wednesday, the courtroom fell silent as Davis entered from a side door. Davis, dressed in a white, prison-issued shirt and pants with blue trim, smiled briefly at his mother before sitting down at the defense table.

Linda Carty, a British woman on death row in America, says that her last hope may be an appeal for clemency by David Cameron.

Gatesville is a tiny town miles from anywhere, deep in the heart of Texas, four hours drive north of Houston. There is little to it but a Wal-Mart, a drive-in movie theatre and two enormous prisons. One of the jails looming out of the flat landscape is called Mountain View. But there is no mountain, and from the prison’s death row, there is no view.

This is where, in all probability, Linda Carty, the only British woman on death row in America, is living out her last weeks and months. Carty has been on death row in Texas for the past nine years, accused of murdering a young mother in order to steal her baby.
