Returned asylum seekers killed or jailed

Refugee advocates say at least nine asylum seekers returned to Sri Lanka by the Howard government were killed and those sent back in past year have been held in police custody and some assaulted.

Australia has suspended its processing of Sri Lankan asylum seekers pending a review of conditions in Sri Lanka. Immigration Minister Chris Evans says the Federal Government has a “major problem” returning asylum seekers who have been involved with the Tamil Tigers.

Phil Glendenning, the director of the Catholic Church’s Edmund Rice Centre, has recently returned from Sri Lanka and says the country is in danger of becoming a police state.

New inquest into Jeremiah Duggan’s death

The High Court has ordered a new inquest into the death of a 22-year-old student from north London whose body was found on a motorway in Germany.

Jeremiah Duggan, from Golders Green, was found near Wiesbaden in March 2003. A German inquest found he killed himself but this ruling was later disputed by a British coroner.

Lord Justice Elias said the inquest must investigate possible “foul play” after new evidence hinted the crash was faked and he might have been killed.

Families and campaigners gathered in Leicester to pay tribute to those that had died in custody.

At a meeting and event organised by the 4WardEver UK Campaign in association with the Friends of Mikey Powell Campaign for Justice, Habib Ullah Campaign and the Leicester Civil Rights Movement, there was no mistaking the serious issues being addressed.

Banners and posters of dead loved ones adorned the walls and stage, the hall was crowded with stalls of books and DVDs and information on families and organisations campaigning on deaths in custody, films were shown and family members and campaigners gave speeches. And, in a grand finale to the evening, entertainment was provided by Yaz Alexander, Lennox Carty, The Trooperz, Genesis Elijah and The Broombusters – which went down a storm.
