Violence against Indigenous women grows amid ‘apathy and injustice’

Violence against Indigenous women is “escalating like never before,” the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) has warned. A series of tragedies have rocked the city of Vancouver (unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh lands) in recent months, including the discovery of the body of a 14-year-old Indigenous child, Noelle O’Soup, in May.

“Apathy and injustice prevail among the authorities while the intersecting crises of MMIWG2S+ [missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, and others], the colonial child welfare system, homelessness, and the opioid crisis are literally killing our people,” said Kukpi7 (Chief) Judy Wilson, UBCIC secretary-treasurer, according to a press release by the organization.

Migrant Media to produce radical new documentary on the Bradford 12

Migrant Media are pleased to announce that they are going into production on a radical feature length documentary about the seminal case of the Bradford 12, supported by the BFI Doc Society Fund (awarding National Lottery funding).

In 1981 twelve young Asian men were arrested and charged with terrorism for defending Bradford from an imminent racist skinhead attack. Following national and international protests in support of the defendants, and a tense lengthy trial, they were acquitted establishing the precedent of the right of organised self-defence for the first time in the UK. This is their story.

Atlanta marks 40th anniversary of Mumia Abu Jamal’s incarceration

To mark the 40th anniversary of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal being sentenced to death, the film “Long Distance Revolutionary” was screened in Atlanta July 3. After decades of political and legal struggle, Mumia’s death sentence was overturned, although he remains incarcerated in Pennsylvania’s hellholes called prisons.

Recently released Black liberation leader, Jalil Montaqim was a special guest and encouraged all efforts to free Mumia.
