A man who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest had been restrained by police for over 20 minutes, a court has heard.

Thomas Orchard, 32, who had paranoid schizophrenia, was handcuffed, held down and had a large fabric webbing belt put across his face, jurors heard. He died in hospital seven days later.

Custody Sergeant Jan Kingshott, 44, and civilian detention officers Simon Tansley, 38, and Michael Marsden, 55, each deny two charges of manslaughter at Bristol Crown Court.

Toni Emma Speck death: Court blocks cell death review

A woman whose daughter died in police custody has lost a High Court bid for a review of the inquest into the death. Toni Emma Speck, 31, of Huntington, was detained under the Mental Health Act at Fulford Road police station in York on 2 June 2011.

She was found slumped in her cell and died later in hospital. Her mother Maureen had wanted judges to review a coroner’s decision following the inquest jury’s narrative verdict in 2015.

Richard Walton dodges Stephen Lawrence spying probe by retiring

A police chief accused of covering up the Stephen Lawrence spying scandal is dodging disciplinary action by retiring.

The official watchdog concluded this week that Richard Walton, who heads Scotland Yard’s anti-terror unit, has a case to answer for misconduct.

It is alleged he was involved in a secret plot by a disgraced undercover unit to gather intelligence on the family of murdered Stephen in the late 1990s.
