Police who detained a man before he died failed to recognise a “medical emergency”, an inquest jury has found. Nadeem Khan, of Lancashire, who had been arrested for displaying violent behaviour, had high levels of cocaine in his blood when he died in 2007.

The jury at Preston Coroner’s Court said Mr Khan was suffering from excited delirium which had not been recognised. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has called for officers to be trained to deal with the condition.

A narrative verdict read out to the court said: “The contributory factors leading to Mr Khan’s death are the physiological stress that Mr Khan suffered.

Ian Bush’s mom drops suit against RCMP over in-custody death of her son

Linda Bush, the mother of a 22-year-old millworker shot in the back of the head by an RCMP officer, said she is abandoning her lawsuit against the force and her nearly five-year-old fight for justice.

At a joint media conference with the force Wednesday in Vancouver, she said the decision was motivated by changes the force had made to its handling of in-custody deaths and the reforms under consideration.

Since losing what may well be her last appeal in September, Linda Carty has had to deal with a lot of unsettling comments.

“They’ve come both from other inmates and guard’s; she says. “I hear them asking, “How come she’s still here? How come she hasn’t been executed?” All I can do is ignore it.

“Since the appeal, they’ve moved me to a cell that feels like it’s 115 degrees inside. My nose bleeds every day – sometimes I get through four T-shirts. The doctor said the reason is the heat.”
