Deaths during or following police contact
Police forces have a statutory duty to refer all incidents involving a death or serious injury to us. Each year, we publish data showing how many people have died after contact with the police.

Our report provides a definitive set of figures for England and Wales. It gives an overview of the nature and circumstances in which the deaths have happened. Read the most recent statistics on deaths during or following police contact (PDF format), and the associated data tables (ODS format).

You can also read our Deaths during or following police contact: Statistics for England and Wales 2021/22 as HTML.

Our time series tables (ODS format) show data on gender, age and ethnicity of the deceased and the police force area by death category since 2004/05 to 2021/22. The time series tables are also available as a PDF.

You can view our presentation (PowerPoint) to learn about the most recent statistics on deaths during or following police contact.

The UK Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007.
